OpenSUSE 12.1 RC 1 released

Posted: October 23, 2011 in Distros

After a short delay, the openSUSE project team has released the first release candidate (RC1) for version 12.1 of its openSUSE operating system. According to the project’s updated openSUSE 12.1 Schedule, a second release candidate is planned for 3 November; the final version is expected to arrive on 16 November 2011.

Aimed at developers, testers and early adopters, the first release candidate adds no new features, instead focusing on addressing bugs found in previous development versions and improving overall stability. The project’s most annoying bugs page currently only lists a single issue with the RC1 – during installation, the Package Manager (YaST) can crash  – though the Bugzilla page for the issue now lists it as having been resolved. Users testing the release are encouraged to provide feedback.

The first release candidate of openSUSE 12.1 is available to download for 32- and 64-bit systems with Kde and Gnome desktops from the project’s site. The current stable release of openSUSE is version 11.4 from March of this year.
