Its Firefox’s 7th Birthday

Posted: November 10, 2011 in Apps, Open Source News

To help celebrate¬†Firefox’s 7th Birthday, Mozilla has adopted Firefox (aka red panda) cubs at Knoxville Zoo ‚Äď they can be seen on a live video stream at¬†Firefox Live. The adoption is Mozilla’s attempt to help raise awareness of the species and their endangered status.

The Mozilla Firefox project was created as a branch from the Mozilla Netscape project or rather rose from its ashes by Dave Hyatt and Blake Ross, who released Firefox 1.0 in November 2004. They felt that the Mozilla suite was too bloated and wanted to create something that could be a stand-alone browser.

There are a variety of twitter apps available for Linux users . New apps just come and go unnoticed . But Hotot caught my sight ¬†and gave me a perfect environment to read and tweet. It has a clean interface divided into 3 neat columns – Timeline , Mentions & Direct Msgs. See how it looks –

As you can see interface is quite clutter free and provides a minimal but beautiful enviroment . The three buttons on top are indicating – Timeline , Mentions & Dm’s. There is also an add button at top so you can add it to see – Retweets by you and others.

It is a full deaktop replacement app. You can search and even modify your profile ( Many clients lacks this feature ) .

It is an jukebox for large collections of mp3/ogg/flac/mpc/ape files, written in perl. There are a lot of music players out there most popular ones are – banshee, amarok etc. Amarok is too much like iTunes and have a kde oriented interface and Banshee is a memory hog. Banshee come pre- installed with new ubuntu, linux mint and other ubuntu based distributions but when it comes to searching through large music collections, Banshee and these popular players come down to their knees. Here is what GMusicBrowser comes to rescue you. ¬†It is an audio player built for Music Fanatics, capable of handling large music collections(> 10,000 songs). As far as searching capabilities go, it seems unbeatable. I scanned about 13.2 gb of songs in about 5 minutes and it didn’t stuck or close like other players.
Installation –

To install it find it in software manager of your distro or visit here. It is available for debian, fedora , gentoo , arch- linux.

Ubuntu  have grabbed a lot of attention when version 11.10 was released earlier this week, but here is what you need to bring alive your old desktop/netbook. Puppy Linux 5.2 Wary was released too this week.

Puppy is a light-weight Linux distribution designed to run on a wide range of computers including older systems that might not have fast processors or much RAM or storage space. As the name suggest it is not a full-fledged distro but an alternative to big players in linux market .
